The King | Official Teaser Trailer | Netflix Film
@skeleton-richard Fyo, my wonderful friend, I’m still technically on my Tumblr hiatus because of my MA dissertation,
but oh my gOD the TRaILeR DRoPpED and I lost my mIND
I can’t believe this. Our dumpster fire film has arrived. All Hail King Timothée Bowlcut the Fifth.
The trailer answers some of my earlier questions…
- No Shakespeare text
- Yes Shakespeare ages, Shakespeare physical appearances (for Hotspur & Louis at least), & Shakespeare Eastcheap lore
- It’s basically just a 15th century period drama, except Falstaff exists (??) and the Dauphin Louis isn’t a scared, out-of-shape 19-year-old
- Most of the film seems to center on the French campaigns — hello, big battle budget
- No arrow wound. Am I blind? Is there an arrow wound?
- They really are just asking us to believe that T.C. is 28 and then 33 y/o. (And you know what? I’ll do it. Timothée’s a great actor. I’ll shut up about his visible infancy until after I see his performance.)
…but I’m still left with the big ones:
- Does this film move chronologically? Or do we just see the characters/moments from the H4 plays in flashback?
- Why are Thomas and Philippa of Lancaster credited on IMDB, but none of Hal’s other siblings?
- Is this entire movie just a self-indulgent mashup of all of Joel Edgerton’s favorite parts of Shakespeare’s Henriad & medieval English military history? OR is it some grand thought experiment of WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF Shakespeare’s Henry V never rejected Falstaff, but instead brought him along to the 1415 invasion
and also spoke in modern prose?I’m not saying either of those lenses are necessarily bad, but it smooths away the most famous rough edge of Shakespeare’s Henry V if he never publicly rejects and banishes Falstaff. If the goal of this film is to depict Hal’s moral greyness, the plot has already deprived him of one of his most brutal, character-making moments. (On the other hand, Edgerton’s Falstaff seems more Solemn, Weary Cynic than Carousing Greedy Hedonist, so maybe it’s a moot point.)
Hands down, my favorite artistic decision in this whole mess is that of opening the trailer with my GIRL skewering Henry with questions and eye contact. Poetic cinema. Make him squirm, Cate.
