I can’t believe I didn’t mention this after watching for the first time last week, but you know what the absolute most refreshing thing about Anne With an E is, I’ve realized? All the actors look like normal, everyday people.
No one has perfect hair or perfect skin or perfect teeth. Not everyone has the exact same body shapes. Not everyone has the exact same clothes. The children are not done up in enough makeup to make them look like adults. (Also again, just the fact that they actually cast age appropriate actors is a big win.) There wasn’t the same kinds of makeup culture we have today and so the characters don’t look like that, and yet how many movies and tv shows can say the same?
